Mark, who looks after Knoll Farm

Mark is the Farmer who looks after Knoll Farm, which is home to two special breeds of cow: British White Cattle and Red Polls. British White Cattle are a native breed of cow, with origins back to the 17th century; they are praised for dual characteristics of beef and milking ability. Red Polls were developed in the latter half of the 19th century and although they are also a dual-purpose breed, they are used mostly as beef suckler cows. Our red polls are registered with the Red Poll Cattle Society as the Somer Valley Herd.

Multiple exciting projects are currently underway at Knoll farm, the re-establishing of rare breeds such as the British White and Red Polls forming part of it. We plan to grow our herd, with both pedigrees and cross-breeds.

Other projects at the farm include:

  • Carbon Sequestration: We have opportunities to access carbon offsets from local firms today. We have been researching how a local scheme could work. If you have any interest in our soils capacity to sequester carbon and receiving payments for doing so, please get in touch.

  • Regenerative: We are practicing regenerative farming with soil health at the centre. So far having put in place rotational/mob grazing, we are refreshing our grass leys with nitrogen fixing legumes, where we are drilling we are using a direct grassland drill. We will soon be experimenting with biological inoculates.

  • Somer Valley Butcher Shop: We will soon be opening the Somer Valley Butcher shop at knoll Farm. Complete with Charcuterie facilities, a Production Kitchen and a retail experience, the butchers will be located in former dairy buildings at the farm. For customers, we'll offer online ordering, 24/7 click and collect and home delivery. For our Somer Valley partners, you can gain a retail presence.
